Wednesday daily cattle summary

This week at Roma Store, cattle numbers declined 37% to 4,759 head. Quality varied from plain to good in what was the final sale of the year, with most drawn from western Queensland regions. Restockers were active throughout, resulting in dearer trends for lighter weight yearlings, while feedlotters remained more selective in their bidding.

• Light C2 yearling steers to restockers gained 7¢, averaging 398¢, while medium C3 lines to feed were back 9¢, at 344¢/kg
• Light D2 yearling heifers to restockers slipped 2¢, at 349¢, while medium D3 sections to feed held firm on 329¢/kg
• Medium C3 grown steers to feed sold to 336¢, and averaged 320¢/kg

CTLX Carcoar throughput decreased 9%, to 2,300 head. A mostly good quality yarding was on offer this week, with a good selection of yearling and grown cattle penned. The usual buyers were in attendance and operated in a mixed market, with a much larger offering of cows presenting in forward condition.

• Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed slipped 3¢, averaging 332¢/kg
• Heavy C3 yearling heifers to feed were back 28¢, averaging 303¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to slaughter eased 13¢, averaging 229¢/kg

Consignments at NVLX Barnawartha increased 13%, to 2,600 head. In the second last sale for the year, quality throughout the offering was excellent – with a notable representation of finished yearlings and vealer sections. The usual group of buyers operated, along with one additional buyer, with heavy export cattle selling to much stronger demand week-on-week.

• Heavy B2 vealer steers to slaughter were back 15¢, averaging 340¢/kg
• Heavy C2 yearling steers to feed slipped 9¢, averaging 316¢/kg
• Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter gained 9¢, averaging 300¢/kg

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:   

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished 2¢ lower on where it had finished the previous day, at 635¢/kg cwt
• Trade steers slipped 2¢, to 329¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers were back 4¢, to 290¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers were up 1¢ , on 298¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows were back 4¢, on 227¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers held firm on 345¢/kg lwt
