Tuesday daily sheep summary

At Dubbo, lamb throughput increased 28% this week – to 35,350 head. Fine weather conditions and a stronger market saw yardings increase week-on-week. Quality was good, with both trade and heavy weight lambs well supplied, along with a larger offering of Merinos.

Mutton consignments increased 9%, to 6,900 head. Most grades were well represented in what was a fair quality yarding overall.

  • Trade weight 3 score lambs to processors were up 7¢, to 646¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs gained 5¢, averaging 660¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy 4 score lambs averaged 2¢ higher, at 657¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were 4¢, averaging 375¢/kg cwt

Lamb numbers at Bendigo increased 4%, to 7,513 head. Quality improved, with lighter weight offerings limited. The usual buying group attended, however some operated more selectively than others, with prices for the better conditioned lambs holding firm to slightly dearer in places.

Mutton throughput declined 21%, to 2,518 head. Market conditions varied, however settled weaker overall with lighter weight Merinos well supplied.

  • Trade weight 3 score new season lambs gained 7¢, averaging 664¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score first-cross lambs slipped 11¢, averaging 599¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs were back 22¢, averaging 662¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score Merino ewes eased 8¢, averaging 359¢/kg cwt

At the close of Monday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 605¢, back 12¢/kg cwt from where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were up 3¢, on 554¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were back 2¢, to 562¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 1¢, on 637¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 2¢, to 643¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator eased 4¢, on 382¢/kg cwt
