Tuesday daily sheep summary

This week at Dubbo, lamb numbers increased 17% to 21,640 head. A particularly mixed yarding were on offer, with trade weight new season drafts in reasonable supply, along with the odd heavy weight pen.

Mutton consignments increased 55%, to 8,730 head. Most grades were represented in what was a mixed yarding of sheep.

• New season trade weight 3 score lambs were up 17¢, to 565¢/kg cwt
• Old season light weight 3 score lambs eased 4¢, averaging 566¢/kg cwt
• Old season trade weight 3 scores to slaughter gained 9¢, to 576¢/kg cwt
• Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes finished 5¢ lower, at 362¢/kg cwt

Lamb throughput at Bendigo declined 15%, to 14,492 head. Quality amongst the new season offering varied, with dryness and seed effects starting to show throughout a bigger percentage of the yarding. The market trended firm to dearer overall despite lighter weights not selling as strongly as previous sales.

Sheep throughput decreased 3%, to 3,682 head. A slight reduction in supply saw mutton prices hold firm to marginally dearer this week, with not all regular export buyers operating.

• New season trade weight 3 score first-cross lambs were up 7¢, to 555¢/kg cwt
• New season heavy weight 4 score lambs gained 34¢, to 563¢/kg cwt
• Heavy weight 3 score Merino ewes averaged 9¢ dearer, at 359¢/kg cwt

At the close of Monday’s markets:

• The eastern states restocker lamb indicator remained unchanged on 612¢/kg cwt
• Merino lambs were up 10¢, on 524¢/kg cwt
• Light lambs were up 5¢, to 577¢/kg cwt
• Trade lambs held firm on 563¢/kg cwt
• Heavy lambs gained 2¢, to 562¢/kg cwt
• The mutton indicator settled 3¢ lower, at 364¢/kg cwt
