Tuesday daily cattle summary

Cattle numbers at Toowoomba declined 16% this week, to 1,076 head. Yearling steer supplies eased significantly, with all the regular buyers in attendance. Some additional export buyers were operating, and a greater number of grown steers were penned compared to the previous sale. All young cattle classes sold to strong demand while grown cattle held mostly firm.

• Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed were up 4¢, averaging 329¢/kg
• Heavy D2 grown steers to feed sold to 282¢, averaging 276¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to processors finished 9¢ dearer, averaging 255¢/kg

Throughput at TRLX Tamworth decreased 27%, to 1,340 head. Hotter conditions over the weekend contributed to a tighter supply of cattle and easier demand from restockers this week, with yearlings making up the bulk of the offering – along with a fair representation of well finished heavy grown steers. Quality varied across most categories, with feeder buyers operating strongly, resulting in a firmer trend for suitable steers and heifers.

• Heavy C2 yearling steers to feed were up 1¢, averaging 324¢/kg
• Medium C2 yearling feeder heifers eased 1¢, averaging 314¢/kg
• Medium D2 cows to processors gained 15¢, averaging 216¢/kg

Wagga consignments declined 7%, to 3,765 head. The harvest season continued to impact numbers this week, with yearling lines well supplied however, and feeder buyers setting the platform for the sale. Processor demand remained subdued, with restocker activity following a similar trend, as quality remained fair overall.

• Heavy C2 yearling steers to feed slipped 6¢, averaging 330¢/kg
• Medium C2 yearling feeder heifers averaged 7¢ lower, at 333¢/kg
• Heavy C3 grown steers to processors eased 2¢, at 291¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to slaughter gained 1¢, averaging 240¢/kg

At the close of Monday’s markets:    

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished on 642¢, back 0.75¢/kg cwt from where it settled the previous day
• Trade steers jumped 3¢, to 337¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers eased 2¢, at 287¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers held firm on 293¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows held steady on 230¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers finished 1¢ lower, at 346¢/kg lwt
