Thursday daily sheep summary

At CTLX Carcoar, lamb supplies increased 81%, to 7,800 head. Quality eased this week, with a good selection of well finished new season lambs on offer and a fair amount of condition amongst older categories, however not all the regular buyers were present in a mostly dearer market.

Mutton throughput increased 14%, to 1,200 head. A mixed yarding of mutton was penned this week, with most grades trending dearer.

  • New season light weight 2 score lambs to restockers averaged 609¢/kg cwt
  • New season trade weight 3 score lambs gained 2¢, to 558¢/kg cwt
  • Old season trade weight 3 score lambs eased 22¢, to 507¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score first-cross ewes were up 66¢, to 333¢/kg cwt

Lamb throughput at Hamilton increased significantly to 1,395 head this week – with new season sections making up the majority. Quality was good, and the usual field of buyers were in attendance, with demand for most categories lifting.

Sheep numbers increased notably this week, to 3,518 head. Plain to heavy weight Merino and crossbred lines made up the bulk of the yarding, with most improving week-on-week.

  • New season trade weight 3 score lambs were back 6¢, to 555¢/kg cwt
  • Old season light weight 2 score Merino lambs averaged 395¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score Merino ewes were up 16¢, averaging 382¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score Merino wethers were up 15¢, averaging 399¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 1¢ lower on 625¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs were back 5¢, on 505¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 1¢, to 569¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were back 1¢, to 558¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were down 1¢, on 552¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator settled 2¢ dearer, at 374¢/kg cwt
