Thursday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at CTLX increased 72% this week, to 12,750 head. Quality was varied across all categories, with a lift in well finished heavy and trade lamb supplies. The usual buying group were in attendance and operated in a mostly firm to slightly dearer market overall.

Mutton numbers increased 75%, to 2,750 head. Quality was mixed, with Merino ewes selling firm week-on-week.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to restockers averaged 554¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors gained 5¢, to 671¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter were firm, on 666¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score old Merino lambs jumped 4¢, to 424¢/kg cwt

Lamb consignments at Hamilton increased 5%, to 6,227 head. Quality was good to average, with lambs showing less cover than previous weeks. A few drafts of very good trade weight lambs were penned, with one less domestic and export buyer present, and most buyers more selective in the market.

Mutton numbers declined 39%, to 3,402 head. Quality was mixed, with Merino wethers and crossbred ewes presenting in good condition.  

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to slaughter averaged 621¢, back 6¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors were back 21¢, at 640¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter averaged 653¢, up 29¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score first-cross ewes gained 1¢, averaging 377¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 600¢, back 17¢/kg cwt from where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were up 4¢, on 594¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were back 2¢, on 608¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 2¢, on 649¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs held firm, on 660¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator gained 3¢, on 416¢/kg cwt
