Thursday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at CTLX decreased 45% this week, to 7,409 head. Widespread rainfall saw numbers decline, however well finished supplementary fed lines were well represented. All the usual buyers operated in the dearer market, and trade and heavy weight categories were in good supply, with restockers and processors bidding strongly.

Mutton numbers declined 59%, to 1,567 head. Quality was plain, with conditions settling dearer for light weight categories.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to restock averaged 701¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter gained 45¢, to 667¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score old lambs to processors jumped 54¢, on 666¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs were up 15¢, averaging 620¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score Merino ewes averaged 449¢/kg cwt

Lamb numbers at Hamilton decreased 18%, to 5,910 head. Quality was mixed, with light and trade weight lambs well supplied. All the usual buyers operated in a dearer market, with the exclusion of one export processor.

Mutton numbers increased 28%, to 5,604 head. Quality was mixed, with most categories selling firm.

  • Light weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter up 34¢, averaging 665¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score old lambs to processors gained 13¢, to 639¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score Merino ewes averaged 409¢, up 1¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino wethers held firm, at 435¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 629¢, up 17¢/kg from where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were down 1¢, on 559¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 8¢, to 599¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 4¢, on 614¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 4¢, to 623¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator 2¢ higher, on 403¢/kg cwt
