Thursday daily sheep summary

Lamb consignments at CTLX decreased 4%, to 6,250 head. Quality was good across the yarding, with both heavy and trade weight categories well supplied. All the regular buyers attended, with market conditions holding firm week-on-week.

Mutton numbers declined 17%, to 3,400 head. Most grades were represented in what was a fair quality yarding. Major categories trended dearer, with Merino wethers in full wool selling strongly.

  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter were up 39¢, on 587¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs were 25¢ dearer, averaging 581¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score Merino ewes averaged 363¢, up 40¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino wethers averaged 383¢, up 61¢/kg cwt

Lamb throughput at Hamilton increased 25%, to 5,567 head. Quality varied from good to average in a mixed yarding. The usual buyers were in operation, with some eager to fill orders in a dearer market overall.

Mutton numbers increased 8%, to 3,197 head. Buyers operated keenly throughout the sale, with light and heavy weight lines selling to particularly strong demand.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to slaughter were 31¢ dearer, on 589¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs averaged 565¢, up 18¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 538¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score first-cross ewes averaged 333¢, up 10¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:                               

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator finished on 543¢, up 11¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were up 4¢, at 498¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 8¢, at 536¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 9¢, to 542¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 5¢, at 542¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator jumped 5¢, to 345¢/kg cwt
