Thursday daily cattle summary

Cattle throughput at Dalby declined 24% this week, to 3,191 head. The rain effected yarding resulted in numbers easing slightly, however yearling and grown cattle sections were well supplied. Competition was strong, with steers to feeder orders holding firm on the previous sale, and their female counterparts marginally dearer.

  • Medium C2 vealer steers to restockers gained 20¢, averaging 408¢/kg
  • Medium C2 yearling steers to feed averaged 2¢ lower, at 385¢/kg
  • Heavy D4  cows to processors gained 20¢, averaging 273¢/kg

Consignments at Casino declined 31%, to 1,240 head. Light and medium weight vealers were well supplied, with only a few drafts of heavier weights and yearlings penned. Quality was fair to good, with those to suit both processors and restockers well represented.

  • Medium C2 vealer steers to restockers eased 1¢, averaging 399¢/kg
  • Medium C2 vealer heifer to processors averaged 3¢ higher, at 367¢/kg
  • Medium D3 cows to slaughter were up 2¢, averaging 252¢/kg

Numbers at Warrnambool decreased 20%, to 800 head. Export lines made up the majority of the yarding, with not all the regular buyers operating fully. Quality was mixed, and prices generally remained firm to slightly cheaper across most categories.

  • Heavy C2 vealer heifers to feeders held firm, averaging 345¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 grown steers to processors gained 6¢, averaging 342¢/kg
  • Heavy D1 dairy cows were back 4¢, averaging 232¢/kg

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:    

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 707.25¢, back 0.50¢ on where it had finished the previous day
  • Trade steers held firm on 371¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were back 12¢, on 324¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers held firm on 331¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were up 2¢, on 253¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers held firm on 386¢/kg lwt
