Thursday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Dalby declined 6% this week, to 3,509 head. Restocker and feeder buyers were particularly active across all classes, with yearling steer categories trending dearer as a result. Yearling heifers finished similarly, with a smaller selection of heavy grown steers and bullocks penned week-on-week.

  • Light C2 yearling steers to restockers gained 15¢, averaging 377¢/kg
  • Medium C2 yearling heifers to feed averaged 350¢, up 6¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to processors were up 3¢, averaging 272¢/kg

Cattle numbers at Casino decreased 5%, to 1,900 head. Medium weight vealers were well represented, along with a few more yearling lines. Quality was mixed and competition was stronger, with some good runs of well finished cattle penned, suitable for both trade and restocker buyers.

  • Medium D2 vealer steers to restockers jumped 14¢, averaging 352¢/kg
  • Medium C2 vealer heifers to processors were up 15¢, averaging 334¢/kg
  • Medium D3 cows to slaughter were back 7¢, averaging 249¢/kg

Consignments at Warrnambool held firm this week, at 950 head. Export cattle continued to make up the majority, with the regular buying group present and active. Quality was mixed, and prices fluctuated across all trade and export grades.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to slaughter averaged 311¢/kg
  • Heavy C4 grown steers to processors were back 6¢, averaging 344¢/kg
  • Heavy D1 dairy cows averaged 2¢ lower, at 218¢/kg

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:          

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) averaged 671¢, up 4.50¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Trade steers were up 2¢, on 367¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were firm, on 338¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers were up 3¢, on 338¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were back 3¢, on 253¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers were up 2¢, to 370¢/kg lwt
