Thursday daily cattle summary

Numbers at Dalby lifted 6% to total 4,215 head. Quality, although a little mixed, featured some good lines of feeder cattle along with some good heavy cows and bullocks. All of the regular buying panel were present and feeders competed strongly for the cattle on offer, however, prices struggled to maintain previous rates.

• • Medium C2 yearling steers to feeders reached 404¢ and averaged 386¢, while heavy weights sold between 340¢ and 412¢ and averaged 375¢/kg
  • D2 medium weight yearling heifers to feed reached 374¢ and averaged 369¢/kg
  • Medium weight D3 cows to slaughter were 24¢ cheaper, averaging 241¢ while heavy D4’s averaged 253¢, back 30¢/kg

Cattle yarded at Casino remained relatively steady on 1,800 head. Consignments were predominantly young cattle which included good supplies of light and medium weight vealers and an increased number of yearlings. The quality of the offering was fair to good, with lines to suit both the processors and restockers. Cows again made up the bulk of the grown cattle yarding, with very few well finished steers and heifers.

• • Medium weight C2 vealer steers to restockers sold 11¢ dearer, averaging 400¢ while similar vealer heifers were 16¢ cheaper on 362¢/kg
  • Medium weight vealer heifers to processors averaged 364¢, up 2¢/kg
  • Processors purchased medium weight D2 cows for an average of 232¢, up 6¢ while D3’s sold 3¢ dearer on 250¢/kg

Consignments to Warrnambool remained similar to last week. Most of the regular buyers were present but not all were active on the export grades. Prices overall basically remained firm to marginally easier.

• • Heavy weight C3 yearling steers to processors were 11¢ dearer, averaging 361¢ while similar yearling heifers were 6¢ cheaper on 349¢/kg
  • Processors purchased heavy weight C3 grown steers for an average of 336¢, back 5¢/kg
  • Medium weight E1 dairy cows averaged 221¢, back 4¢/kg

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:    

• • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) lifted 0.75¢ from where it finished the previous day, to 725.75¢/kg cwt
  • Trade steers eased 2¢ to 374¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were up 3¢, on 341¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers jumped 3¢ to 341¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows averaged 252¢, back 3¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers slipped 1¢, to 383¢/kg lwt
