Thursday daily cattle summary

Numbers at Dalby eased week-on-week to 2,070 head and consisted of a good supply of cows and heifers while grown steers and feeder cattle were in smaller numbers. Quality of consignments was good and included lines that had been supplementary fed or finished on crop. There were some well-bred steers and heifers yarded suitable for feeders and backgrounders.

• Medium C2 yearling steers restockers eased 11¢ to 393¢ while those to feed dropped 12¢ to average 369¢/kg
• C2 medium yearling heifers to slaughter returned 341¢, back 17¢ while light weights to restockers eased 1¢ and averaged 391¢/kg
• Light weight C3 grown heifer to processors averaged 310¢/kg
• Heavy weight D4 cows to slaughter were 5¢ cheaper on 269¢/kg

Consignments to Casino lifted 81% to 1,375 head and predominantly consisted of young cattle. Quality and condition were mixed throughout the yarding, with a few supplementary fed yearlings offered. Demand from restockers for light weight young cattle was very strong and this in turn forced the processors to operate more in the medium and heavy weight classes that still fell into specifications.

• Light C2 vealer steers to restockers jumped 23¢ and averaged 423¢/kg
• C2 light weight vealer heifers to slaughter were 4¢ dearer on 383¢/kg
• Medium weight D3 cows to processors averaged 256¢, up 7¢/kg

Throughput at Warrnambool eased to 701 head. There were very few vealers offered with the majority of the offering consisting of grown steers and cows. Quality was relatively plain throughout the young cattle however did include some grain assisted steers and heifers which sold strongly.

• Heavy C3 yearling steers to processors eased 29¢, averaging 338¢/kg
• Heavy C3 beef cows eased 1¢ to average 271¢/kg
• Dairy D2 heavy cows averaged 240¢ to be 8¢/kg cheaper

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:    

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled on 719.75, up 0.75¢/kg cwt from where it was the previous day
• Trade steers were back 1¢, on 379¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers eased 20¢ on 335¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers were 5¢ easier, on 339¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows held steadyon 256¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers finished 1¢ lower, on 377¢/kg lwt
