Friday daily sheep summary

This week at Wagga, lamb numbers declined 39% to 20,000 head. Quality slipped, with young shorn lambs well supplied and dryness seen in sections. Top drafts of well finished trade lines to processors settled particularly dearer, while the usual export buyers competed strongly on heavier sections.

Sheep consignments decreased 14%, to 6,000 head. It was a very good quality offering of mutton this week, with most presenting in excellent condition resulting in vibrant bidding from the usual buyers.

• New season light weight 2 score lambs to restockers gained 39¢, to 740¢/kg cwt
• New season trade weight 3 score lambs to slaughter were up 8¢, to 542¢/kg cwt
• New season heavy weight 4 score lambs were up 16¢, averaging 561¢/kg cwt
• New season extra heavy weight 4 score lambs finished at 544¢, at 26¢/kg cwt
• Heavy 4 score first-cross ewes were 9¢ lower, averaging 324¢/kg cwt

At the close of Thursday’s markets:

• The eastern states restocker lamb indicator gained 7¢, averaging 610¢/kg cwt
• Merino lambs gained 4¢, to 513¢/kg cwt
• Light lambs were back 3¢, to 556¢/kg cwt
• Trade lambs were up 2¢, to 513¢/kg cwt
• Heavy lambs jumped 1¢, to 514¢/kg cwt
• The mutton indicator remained unchanged on 368¢/kg cwt
