Friday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at Wagga increased 20% this week, to 26,700 head. Quality across trade and heavy lamb classes was mixed, with prices for lighter categories easing significantly due to lower demand from processors particularly. Not all export buyers operated, however domestic processors operated keenly on finished trade and heavy lambs in shorter skins.

Mutton numbers increased 40%, to 7,000 head. Quality varied this week, with all weights and grades represented.

  • Light weight 2 score lambs to processors averaged 592¢, back 50¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score lambs to processors were back 20¢, to 620¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs averaged 642¢, back 46¢/kg cwt
  • Extra Heavy weight 4 score lambs averaged 626¢, back 23¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score Merino ewes gained 26¢, to 351¢/kg cwt 

At the close of Thursday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 523¢, back 11¢/kg cwt from where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were back 2¢, on 563¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were back 5¢, to 550¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs held firm, on 609¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were back 4¢, to 627¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator eased 1¢, on 383¢/kg cwt
