Friday daily sheep summary

This week at Wagga, lamb consignments increased 31%, to 39,000 head. Quality throughout trade and heavy weight lines slipped on last week’s levels, with the harsher winter conditions showing their effects. Not all export buyers were operating fully, however major domestic processors bid keenly on those with finish and shorter skins, while southern processors drove the market for lighter categories particularly.
Mutton numbers declined 28%, to 5,000 head. Quality was mixed, and all weights and grades were well represented, with heavy crossbred ewes trending dearer week-on-week.

- Light weight 2 score lambs to processors jumped 22¢, to 617¢/kg cwt
- Trade weight 3 score lambs to slaughter gained 33¢, on 671¢/kg
- Heavy weight 4 score lambs averaged 29¢ higher, on 688¢/kg
- Heavy weight 3 score Merino ewes eased 38¢, to 387¢/kg
At the close of Thursday’s markets:

- The eastern states restocker lamb indicator averaged 579¢, back 1¢/kg cwt from where it finished the previous day
- Merino lambs were up 3¢, on 596¢/kg cwt
- Light lambs were up 4¢, to 593¢/kg cwt
- Trade lambs were up 4¢, to 639¢/kg cwt
- Heavy lambs were up 5¢, to 655¢/kg cwt
- The mutton indicator eased 1¢, on 397¢/kg cwt
