Friday daily cattle summary

This week at Roma Prime, consignments increased 31% to 1,250 head. It was a mixed quality yarding of prime cattle, with lighter weight cows well supplied. All the usual Queensland and NSW processors operated, with the market trending dearer once again.  

  • Heavy C4 grown steers to processors were up 2¢, averaging 322¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 grown heifers to slaughter gained 9¢, averaging 307¢/kg
  • Heavy D3 cows to the same orders jumped 11¢, averaging 267¢/kg

Dubbo cattle throughput increased substantially this week, yarding 4,850 head. Finer weather conditions saw markets strengthen, with a good level of quality seen throughout most categories. Well finished cattle were well represented across all sections, along with a number of plainer lines from far western regions.  

  • Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed gained 5¢, averaging 392¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 yearling heifers to processors averaged 370¢, up 12¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to slaughter were up 6¢, averaging 277¢/kg  

Numbers at Bairnsdale increased 13%, to 517 head. Export lines were well supplied, with the usual buying group present and operating in a mixed market. Prime cattle were in tight supply, with cows making up the bulk of the yarding.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to slaughter were up 21¢, averaging 345¢/kg
  • Medium E1 dairy cows averaged 10¢ higher, at 217¢, while heavy D2 lines to processors were up 9¢, averaging 267¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:         

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) averaged 720.25¢, up 3.75¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Trade steers were up 2¢, on 377¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were back 8¢, on 338¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers were back 5¢, on 338¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were up 2¢, on 259¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers held firm, on 387¢/kg lwt
