Friday daily cattle summary

Consignments at Roma Prime declined 12% this week, to 953 head. Quality was good across the penning, with all the usual processor buyers competing strongly on older cattle and cow lines, resulting in a dearer trend overall.  

• Heavy C4 grown steers to processors gained 4¢, averaging 323¢/kg
• Light D4 grown heifers to slaughter averaged 292¢, up 4¢/kg
• Medium D3 cows to processors were up 12¢, averaging 253¢/kg

Cattle numbers at Dubbo over doubled, with 2,930 head yarded. Prime cattle were well supplied throughout all sections, with young cattle suitable to feeders and restockers also in good supply. All the regular buyers were present and competing in a solid market.

• Medium C2 yearling steers to feed were up 3¢, averaging 384¢/kg
• Heavy C3 yearling heifers to feed averaged 356¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to processors were up 7¢, averaging 274¢/kg

Consignments at Bairnsdale declined 46%, to 369 head. A full field of buyers were present, however not all operated fully in what was a dearer market overall. Prime drafts were notably limited, with cows particularly well represented.

• Heavy D3 grown steers to processors were up 3¢, averaging 349¢/kg
• Medium E1 dairy cows averaged 219¢, up 33¢, while heavy D2 lines to processors gained 16¢, averaging 260¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:         

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) averaged 673.50¢, up 2.50¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
• Trade steers were firm, on 367¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers were back 1¢, on 337¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers were back 2¢, on 336¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows were firm, on 253¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers were up 1¢, to 372¢/kg lwt
