Friday daily cattle summary

Cattle numbers at Roma Prime increased 23% this week, to 630 head. Quality across prime cattle sections varied from fair to good, with the majority sourced from the local supply area. Only the major processor buyers were operating, with demand lifting for grown female types in particular.

  • Medium C4 grown steers to processors averaged 291¢/kg
  • Light D4 grown heifers to slaughter were up 1¢, to 277¢/kg
  • Medium D3 cows to the same orders were back 3¢, averaging 232¢/kg

Throughput at Dubbo decreased 34%, to 2,965 head. Widespread showers across the supply area saw numbers tighten this week, with a good selection of young cattle penned, and those to the trade selling to strong demand. Well finished grown steers were harder to find however, and a dearer trend recorded as a result.

  • Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed sold to 380¢, averaging 351¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 yearling heifers to feed gained 1¢, averaging 326¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to processors finished 1¢ higher, at 243¢/kg

At Bairnsdale, cattle supplies increased 12% to 640 head. The usual field of buyers were in attendance, with the market settling lower across most categories. Quality varied as a larger offering of grown steers and bullocks were penned, with most selling to a cheaper trend.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to processors were back 2¢, averaging 304¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter sold to 330¢, averaging 318¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to the same orders slipped 8¢, averaging 248¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:         

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 655.25¢, back 0.75¢/kg cwt from where it settled the previous day
  • Trade steers eased 1¢, on 339¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were down 3, on 301¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers held firm at 299¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were back 1¢,on 229¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers finished 1¢ dearer, at 354¢/kg lwt
