Friday daily cattle summary

This week at Rome Prime, cattle supplies decreased 28% to 817 head. A much plainer yarding of prime cattle were on offer, with cows in notable supply along with the occasional good quality pen of bullocks. All the usual processor buyers operated, and the market trended dearer in most sections.

• Heavy C4 bullocks to processors gained 7¢, averaging 291¢/kg
• Light D3 grown heifers to slaughter were up 16¢, at 263¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to the same orders were up 3¢, averaging 250¢/kg

Dubbo throughput declined 10%, to 4,540 head. It was a plainer quality yarding this week, with not a great deal of good quality trade and heavy weight cattle on offer compared to previous sales. Larger influences of western consignments were penned, however not all the regular buyers operated resulting in a mixed market.

• Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed sold to 382¢, averaging 355¢/kg
• Heavy C3 yearling heifers to processors gained 4¢, at 328¢/kg
• Heavy C4 grown steers to slaughter eased 13¢, averaging 299¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to processors slipped 2¢, averaging 241¢/kg

Numbers at Bairnsdale decreased 47%, to 340 head. The usual buying group was present and active in a mixed market this week, with good quality prime cattle in limited supply. Yearling steers to the trade sold mostly dearer, while their female counterparts finished mostly firm overall.

• Heavy D3 yearling heifers to processors were up 4¢, averaging 315¢/kg
• Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter eased 3¢, averaging 325¢/kg
• Heavy D3 cows to the same orders sold to 257¢, averaging 247¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:         

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 665.50¢, up 2.25¢/kg cwt from where it settled the previous day
• Trade steers held firm, on 349¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers held firm, on 311¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers were back 2¢, on 302¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows held firm,on 232¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers remained unchanged at 358¢/kg lwt
