Friday daily cattle summary

Cattle numbers at Roma Prime recorded a substantial increase week-on-week, at 987 head. Returning to a normal sized yarding, quality across prime cattle categories was plain to good. All the usual processors were operating, with bullocks and grown heifers selling to strong competition, and settling dearer as a result.
- Heavy C4 grown steers to processors averaged 312¢, up 21¢, while heavy bullocks gained 17¢, to 311¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to slaughter finished 3¢ lower, averaging 239¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to the same orders averaged 10¢ higher, at 267¢/kg
Consignments at Dubbo near doubled this week, to 2,715 head. Quality was mixed, with cattle sourced from western regions well represented. Feeder buyers continued to operate strongly across all categories, with processors also bidding keenly, resulting in a dearer trend overall.
- Medium C2 yearling steers to feed averaged 361¢, up 16¢/kg
- Light D2 yearling heifers to restockers finished 7¢ lower, averaging 309¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to processors held firm, averaging 259¢/kg
Throughput at Bairnsdale eased 8%, to 840 head. Export lines made up the majority of the yarding, with the usual buying group operating in a firm to dearer market overall. Quality throughout trade sections was notable, although varied across grown categories.
- Heavy D3 yearling heifers to processors averaged 313¢, up 8¢/kg
- Heavy D3 grown steers to slaughter jumped 3¢, averaging 310¢/kg
- Medium E1 dairy cows averaged 192¢, up 13¢/kg
At the close of Thursday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 619.25¢, up 4¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers were up 2¢, at 339¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers held firm, on 308¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers were up 7¢, to 314¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows were up 1¢, to 241¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers were up 5¢, to 347¢/kg lwt
