Friday daily cattle summary

Cattle yarded at Roma Prime more than doubled week-on-week to 996 head and quality was fairly mixed. Good bullocks attracted solid competition, despite one major processor not operating, but processor buyers were more selective on plainer lines of cattle.

• Heavy C4 bullocks to slaughter reached 300¢ and averaged 298¢/kg
• Heavy weight D4 cows to slaughter eased 9¢ to settle on 259¢/kg
• Heavy weight C3 bulls were 1¢ easier on 279¢/kg

Consignments to Dubbo increased by 51% to 6,150 head and contained plenty of lines of prime cattle. Most of the regular buyers operated in the cheaper market.

• Heavy weight C3 yearling steers to feed eased 21¢ to average 356¢/kg
• Heavy C3 yearling heifers to feeders were 22¢ cheaper on 339¢/kg
• Medium weight C4 grown sterrs to processors were back 15¢ on 322¢/kg
• Heavy weight D4 cows to slaughter were 8¢ cheaper, settling on 261¢/kg

Numbers at Bairnsdale increased slightly to 734 head. Quality was very mixed with more secondary and plainer cattle on offer which had an effect in most categories while the mostly grass finished trade cattle sold to a dearer trend.

• Heavy D3 yearling heifers to processors eased 5¢ to 323¢/kg
• Medium weight C3 grown steers to slaughter were back 10¢ to settle on 335¢/kg
• Heavy D4 cows to slaughter gained 4¢ to average 265¢/kg

At the close of Thurday’s markets:           

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled on 706¢, down 6.25¢/kg cwt from where it was the previous day
• Trade steers were back 4¢, on 376¢/kg lwt
• Medium steers eased 7¢, on 328¢/kg lwt
• Heavy steers slipped 6¢, on 320¢/kg lwt
• Medium cows eased 2¢,on 249¢/kg lwt
• Feeder steers finished 2¢ easier, on 378¢/kg lwt
