Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb numbers at Forbes decreased 20% this week, to 24,850 head. Quality was average across the yarding, with plainer lambs well represented. A good selection of heavy and extra heavy lines was on offer, with the usual buying group operating in a firm to easier market.

Mutton throughput declined 22%, to 5,650 head. Merinos made up the bulk of the offering, with quality mixed and a cheaper trend underlining the sale.

  • Trade weight 2 score old lambs to processors eased 3¢, to 514¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to processors dropped 12¢, to 506¢/kg
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 505¢, back 5¢/kg
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes averaged 345¢, up 11¢/kg

Consignments at Ballarat decreased 9%, to 22,674 head. Quality was mixed, with the usual buyer group present and active across all categories. Lighter lambs to suit restocker orders were well supplied, with heavier export lines presenting in notable condition.

Sheep numbers declined 2%, to 9,127 head. Quality was good across the yarding, with Merino ewes and wethers well supplied.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs to restockers dropped 56¢, to 488¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors eased 13¢, to 523¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs were 28¢ lower, on 489¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were up 8¢, averaging 321¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:                                     

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator finished at 524¢, back 6¢/kg cwt on where it finished yesterday.
  • Merino lambs were up 2¢, at 466¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were back 5¢, on 495¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were back 4¢, on 510¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were back 3¢, on 501¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator was back 3¢, to 306¢/kg cwt
