Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb throughput at Forbes decreased 29% this week, to 22,308 head. Quality was fair, with some good lines of well finished and supplementary fed lambs on offer. Heavy and extra heavy categories were well supplied, with all the usual buyers competing in a firmer to slightly dearer market.

Mutton consignments decreased 48%, to 3,948 head. Merinos made up the bulk of the yarding, with quality mixed across the penning.

  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter were 11¢ dearer, at 530¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to processors were up 5¢, at 517¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 489¢, up 5¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were up 26¢, averaging 363¢/kg cwt

Consignments at Ballarat decreased 28%, to 17,493 head. Quality was average to good week-on-week, with all weights and grades on offer. The usual buying group operated keenly in the market, with most categories selling to a dearer trend overall.

Mutton numbers decreased 2%, to 6,578 head. All categories were represented, with an increase in activity from the usual buying group, resulting in a firm to dearer trend.

  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors averaged 563¢, up 31¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs to slaughter were up 39¢, on 556¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score old lambs averaged 499¢, up 17¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes jumped 1¢, averaging 328¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:                                     

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator finished on 540¢, up 28¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs held firm, on 485¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 2¢, at 517¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 6¢, to 527¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 2¢, at 519¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator gained 7¢, on 330¢/kg cwt
