Wednesday daily sheep summary

Lamb numbers at Ballarat increased 22% from the previous sale to 31,149 head after the Australia Day break last week. Quality was good across all categories and heavy weight lambs were in good supply. The regular buying group was in attendance and competition across all categories was strong.

Sheep consignments saw a 2% increase to 12,902 head and all categories and weights were well represented. Quality was very mixed with a number of good quality heavy weight crossbred ewes on offer.

  • Trade weight 3 score lambs to slaughter averaged 551¢/kg cwt, up 8¢
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs to slaughter gained 5¢ to average 554¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy 4 score lambs to slaughter increased 16¢ at 524¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were 309¢/kg cwt, jumping 30¢

Forbes saw an 11% drop to 28,820 head from a fortnight ago despite no sale on the public holiday . Quality was mixed with some good quality lines of well finished lambs on offer. Heavy and extra heavy weights were well supplied and competition was good from the usual buying group in attendance.

Sheep yardings dipped 7% to 9,150 head of mixed quality lots.

  • Trade weight 3 score lambs to slaughter were up 24¢, averaging 528¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs to slaughter increased 41¢ to 567¢/kg cwt
  • Extra Heavy weight 4 score lambs to slaughter gained 36¢ to average 550¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes were 344¢/kg cwt, jumping 39¢

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator dropped 21¢ on 551¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs jumped 9¢ on 495¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 1¢ on 518¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs dipped 5¢ on 550¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were 2¢ lower on 559¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator increased 7¢ on 309¢/kg cwt
