Wednesday daily cattle summary

With just 972 head offered, the Roma Store yarding was the second smallest since MLA first began reporting the centre in 2010. Cattle supplies, which were back 75% week-on-week, were further restricted by rainfall across the supply region. Restockers and feeder buyers competed strongly over the smaller pool of cattle and prices improved.
- Light (200-280kg) C2 yearling steers to restockers jumped 9¢, averaging 362¢ and selling to a top of 380¢/kg
- Similar weight D2 females to the same orders gained 8¢, averaging 332¢ and peaking at 351¢/kg
- Medium D3 yearling feeder heifers lifted 14¢, averaging 318¢ and selling from 290¢ to 338¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to slaughter eased 7¢, averaging 217¢/kg
Throughput at CTLX declined 38%, at 1,775 head, and quality was markedly better. There was a good selection of prime cattle throughout, as well as a good supply of lines suitable to feed on. There was an additional buyer in the grown steers section, while the rest of the usual panel were present.
- Heavy C3 yearling feeder steers were firm, averaging 316¢ and selling to 329¢/kg
- Light (280-330kg) C2 yearling feeder heifers eased 5¢, averaging 300¢/kg
- Heavy C4 grown steers to feed on sold from 272¢ to 316¢, to average 309¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows eased 1¢, averaging 229¢/kg
Consignments at NVLX increased 8%, to 2,800 head, and quality was mixed, with most yearlings selling to feeder orders. The usual panel of domestic processors were operating, but there were fewer export processor buyers present.
- Medium and heavy C2 yearling feeder steers improved 5¢ and 6¢, respectively, averaging 314¢/kg
- Heavy C2 yearling feeder heifers slipped 8¢, averaging 286¢/kg
- The same weight C3 yearling heifers to the trade improved 1¢, averaging 286¢/kg
- Heavy C3 grown steers to feeder buyers improved 7¢, averaging 302¢, while those to slaughter eased 6¢, averaging 291¢/kg
At the close of Tuesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) closed at 591.50¢, back 1.00¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers improved 1¢, to 305¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers eased 1¢, to 282¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers were back 3¢, at 285¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows eased 1¢, to 222¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers were steady, at 321¢/kg lwt
