Tuesday daily sheep summary

Lamb numbers in Dubbo decreased significantly this week, to 14,100 head. Following showers recorded over the weekend, quality was fair to good across the yarding. Trade and heavy weight categories were well supplied, with Merinos limited in selection.

Mutton consignments declined at a similar rate, back to 5,750 head week-on-week. Good lines of well finished sheep were in good supply, along with a fair selection of plainer drafts.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs lifted 71¢, averaging 550¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 4 score old lambs to processors jumped 13¢, at 523¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score old lambs were 10¢ dearer, averaging 533¢/kg cwt
  • Light weight 2 score Merino ewes were 35¢ lower, averaging 287¢/kg cwt

Throughput at Bendigo increased 53%, to 14,717 head. The market trended dearer overall, with large pens sent down from the Riverina, however those that were best suited to processor orders were sourced mainly from the Mallee district.

Mutton numbers increased 72%, to 5,150 head. All the regular buyers were in attendance, with many keen to fill orders, resulting in a dearer trend.

  • Light weight 2 score old lambs were 5¢ dearer, at 491¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score old lambs to processors eased 7¢, at 523¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter eased 4¢, to 510¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 2 score Merino ewes were 10¢ dearer, on 344¢/kg cwt

At the close of Monday’s markets:                                      

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator finished on 512¢, up 2¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Merino lambs were up 4¢, at 485¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 4¢, at 515¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 1¢, to 521¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were up 2¢, at 517¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator gained 5¢, on 323¢/kg cwt
