Friday daily cattle summary

Cattle numbers at Roma Prime increased significantly this week, yarding 1,054 head. Quality was mixed, with one processor buyer from Victoria providing good competition on grown cattle categories, while cow sections trended cheaper.
- Heavy C4 grown steers to processors jumped 1¢, averaging 270¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to slaughter eased 3¢, averaging 205¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to similar orders were 6¢ lower, averaging 215¢/kg
Throughput at Dubbo increased 25%, to 3,300 head. Quality was fair across the yarding, with consignments from the far west lacking finish and continuing to have a strong presence. Prime conditioned cattle were limited, with young trade lines selling to a dearer trend week-on-week.
- Light C2 vealer steers to restockers jumped 23¢, averaging 321¢/kg
- Light C2 yearling steers to feed were 20¢ dearer, averaging 301¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to processors averaged 205¢, up 5¢/kg
Numbers at Bairnsdale decreased 27%, to 628 head. Export cattle made up the bulk of the yarding, with the usual buying group operating in a stronger market. Quality was mixed, with prime cattle in short supply. Vealer and yearling trade lines improved in sections, while cows holding firm due to subdued competition.
- Heavy C2 yearling steers to processors jumped 10¢, averaging 279¢/kg
- Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter were up 7¢, averaging 297¢/kg
- Heavy D3 cows to the same orders sold to 230¢, averaging 219¢/kg
At the close of Thursday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished on 548.75¢, up 2.00¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers were up 1¢, at 304¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers were back 4¢, to 270¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers held firm, on 277¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows were up 2¢, at 198¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers were up 2¢, to 298¢/kg lwt
