Friday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Roma Prime decreased 45%, to 544 head. Quality remained fair to good despite the smaller yarding, with all the usual export processors present and operating. Conditions improved across prime cattle sections, with a dearer trend underlining the sale.
- Heavy C4 grown steers to processors averaged 283¢, up 4¢/kg
- Light D3 grown heifers to slaughter settled 20¢ dearer, averaging 242¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to the same orders averaged 230¢, up 7¢/kg
Cattle numbers at Dubbo increased 76% this week, to 2,635 head. It was a fair quality yarding, with those suited to the trade and feed in short supply. Well finished bullocks were also limited, with a strong percentage of cows penned.
- Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed averaged 321¢, up 4¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling feeder heifers were back 3¢, averaging 300¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to processors finished 4¢ lower, averaging 222¢/kg
Bairnsdale consignments increased 13%, to 1,277 head. The usual buying group operated in a cheaper market overall, with quality easing week-on-week. Supply of secondary and plainer light weight lines increased slightly, with yearling steers to the trade holding firm in price.
- Heavy D3 yearling heifers to slaughter averaged 286¢, lowering 6¢/kg
- Heavy D3 bullocks to processors eased 11¢, averaging 294¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to the same orders settled 1¢ dearer, averaging 235¢/kg
At the close of Thursday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) averaged 570¢, holding firm on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers held steady, on 313¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers were up 2¢, on 289¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers held steady, on 283¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows held steady, on 209¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers finished firm, on 311¢/kg lwt
