Friday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Roma Prime decreased 35% this week, to 571 head. Quality in the offering fluctuated, with a full panel of processor buyers all in operation. Plainer bullocks eased in price, while better conditioned cows held firm.

  • Heavy D4 grown steers to processors averaged 268¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 grown heifers to slaughter averaged 259¢, back 9¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to the same order held firm, averaging 236¢/kg

Dubbo cattle numbers increased 14%, to 3,560 head. It was a fair to good quality yarding, with younger lines in prime condition well supplied. Categories to suit feeder orders were limited, with a good selection of cows and bullocks penned.

  • Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed averaged 303¢, back 12¢/kg
  • Medium C3 yearling heifers to processors eased 1¢, averaging 294¢/kg
  • Heavy C4 grown steers to slaughter were 6¢ lower, averaging 285¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows to processors were 8¢ dearer, averaging 231¢/kg

Consignments at Bairnsdale increased 14%, to 685 head. A plethora of buyers filled the sale, all operating in what was a mixed market. Quality varied across all categories, with prime cattle in short supply and cow lines well represented.

  • Heavy D3 yearling heifers to feed were 5¢ lower, averaged 279¢/kg
  • Heavy C3 grown steers to processors were 2¢ dearer, averaging 296¢/kg
  • Heavy D2 cows to slaughter were up 9¢, averaging 224¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:                                                                           

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished on 575.00¢, back 0.50¢/kg cwt on where it finished yesterday
  • Trade steers were back 2¢, on 319¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers were back 1¢, on 293¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers were up 1¢, at 283¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows were steady, at 218¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers were back 2¢, on 309¢/kg lwt
