2015-16 goat prices hit new highs, while exports ease

Over-the-hook export goat indicators continued to set new records throughout the 2015-16 fiscal year. The 12-16kg cwt goat indicator averaged 128¢ higher year-on-year, on 503¢/kg cwt.
In fact, goat prices have maintained an upwards trajectory for the past two years, and hit a new high of 555¢/kg cwt in June 2016, bringing the indicator in line with both beef and lamb for the first time.
Underpinning some of the price rise were lower supplies during 2015-16, with eastern states average weekly slaughter down 9% year-on-year, at 31,126 head.
Queensland average weekly eastern states kill for the fiscal year slipped 20%, to 11,838 head, while Victoria and SA were down 20% and 1%, to 9,164 head and 6,170 head, respectively. NSW was the only state to record an increase in average weekly kill levels, to 3,953 head, with new processing facilities opening this year attributing to the rise.
In 2015-16, goatmeat exports eased 14%, to 29,543 tonnes swt, with shipments to all major destinations down year-on-year.
- Exports to the US accounted for 65% of the total volume, although volumes eased slightly year-on-year, to 19,227 tonnes swt.
- Volumes to Canada slipped 34%, to 1,444 tonnes swt, while exports to the Caribbean decreased 38%, to 1,575 tonnes swt.
- Shipments to Taiwan were 27% lower, at 2,849 tonnes swt, while volumes to China and Hong Kong eased 4% and 50%, to 741 tonnes swt and 715 tonnes swt, respectively.
- Exports to Japan totalled 355 tonnes swt, down 11%, while those to Korea totalled 1,427 tonnes swt, back 20% on the previous year.
