Wednesday daily sheep summary

Ballarat lamb numbers were back 7% week-on-week to 38,901 head. Quality was fair across all categories, with lighter lambs well-supplied although there were fewer heavy lambs on offer. The full field of buyers were operating in a steady market, with good quality trade and heavy weight lambs selling to a dearer trend.

Sheep consignments increased 2% week-on-week to 14,599 head, including some good quality Merino wethers and crossbred lots.

  • Light weight 2 score young lambs to restockers jumped 29¢ averaging 532¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight 3 score young lambs were up 12¢ to 528¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score young lambs were 6¢ dearer on 521¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score 3 first cross ewes increased 2¢ to 290¢/kg cwt

Lamb yardings at Forbes rose 25% week-on-week to 13,563 head of mixed quality lots. Heavy and extra heavy lambs were in good supply. The usual buying group were present and operating in a stable market.

Sheep numbers were back 26% on the previous week to 4,870 head, and quality varied. The majority of the yarding was made up of Merinos.

  • Trade weight 3 score young lamb to slaughter increased 6¢ to average 513¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs were back 3¢ to 557¢/kg cwt
  • Extra heavy weight 4 score lambs dropped 9¢ averaging 569¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes gained 8¢ to average 342¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:                                                                                         

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator gained 2¢ on 553¢/kg cwt
  • Merino lambs increased 6¢ at 465¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs grew 4¢ on 512¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were up 1¢ at 521¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs rose 1¢ on 527¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator head steady 327¢/kg cwt
