Wednesday daily sheep summary

Ballarat lamb numbers were back 13% week-on-week to 36,193 head in the last sale of 2015. Quality ranged from average to good across all categories and light weight, trade weight and heavy lambs were well supplied. The full field of buyers were in attendance and competition was strong across a generally dearer market.

Sheep yardings dropped 46% week-on-week to 8,273 head and most categories sold to a cheaper trend. Several big runs of crossbred and Merino ewes were on offer, boosting overall quality of the sale.

  • Light weight 2 score young lambs to restockers dropped 33¢ to average 469¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 3 score young lambs to slaughter gained 8¢ to 524¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes fell 39 ¢ to average 273 ¢/kg cwt

Lamb consignments at Forbes fell 20% week-on-week to 14,800 head for their final sale of 2015. Mixed quality lambs were on offer and well-finished shorn lambs were well supplied. Most of the usual buyers were in attendance and operating in a generally cheaper market across all categories.

Sheep numbers eased 8% week-on-week to 8,100 head of mixed quality lots.

  • Trade weight 3 score lambs dropped 30¢ to 487¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy weight 4 score lambs to slaughter averaged 516¢/kg cwt back 13¢
  • Medium weight 3 score merino ewes fell 36¢ to 274¢/kg cwt

At the close of Tuesday’s markets:                                                                                         

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator was on 511¢/kg cwt, fall 11¢
  • Merino lambs were on 414¢, down 20¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were on 483¢, back 5¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were on 509¢, back 1¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs were on 524¢, steady
  • The mutton indicator finished on 267¢, down 12¢/kg cwt
