Wednesday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Roma Store reached 10,811 head, up 18% week-on-week. Large offerings continued, with drought affected cattle from the west dominating the yarding. Increased numbers of light calves penned struggled to maintain the previous sale’s prices, while increased competition from restocker and feedlot buyers pushed heifer prices higher.
- Light (280-330kg) C2 yearling restocker steers decreased 8¢, averaging 298¢/kg
- Medium C3 yearling feeder steers improved 13¢, averaging 290¢g
- Medium D3 yearling restocker heifers improved 15¢, averaging 276¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to slaughter averaged 225¢, up 6¢/kg
CTLX numbers decreased 22%, to 2,000 head. A large percentage of plainer vealers and yearlings in store condition made up the yarding, and the limited selection of cattle in prime condition resulted in fierce competition amongst the regular buyers that attended. Grown steers sold a cheaper trend and their female counterparts did much the same.
- Light (200-280kg) C2 vealer steers to restockers decreased 7¢, averaging 322¢/kg
- Light (200-280kg) C2 vealer heifers to the same orders eased 2¢, averaging 286¢/kg
- Medium C3 yearling feeder steers were down 3¢, averaging 328¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to slaughter averaged 262¢, back 2¢/kg
Consignments at NVLX Wodonga increased 5%, to 1,850 head. Quality was mixed with some secondary cattle continuing to show the effects of the wintry conditions. The usual group of domestic and export buyers were in attendance, and strong competition for supplementary fed yearlings helped cement a floor in prices.
- Heavy C2 yearling feeder steers held steady, averaging 335¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling heifers to slaughter eased 21¢, averaging 316¢/kg
- Heavy C3 grown steers were down 23¢, averaging 319¢/kg
- Light C3 grown heifers sold to 312¢, and averaged 291¢/kg
At the close of Tuesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 566.50¢, back 1.75¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers averaged 319¢, back 2¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers averaged 312¢, back 1¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers averaged 295¢, back 10¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers averaged 313¢, back 5¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows averaged 234¢, up 1¢/kg lwt
