Wednesday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Roma Store almost halved, to just 5,050 head, but there was a larger proportion of plainer western cattle penned. Limited supply provided spirited competition and prices improved across most categories.
- Light (280-330kg) C2 yearling restocker steers improved 13¢, averaging 313¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling feeder steers eased 5¢, averaging 315¢/kg
- Light (200-280kg) D2 yearling restocker heifers eased 7¢, averaging 281¢ and selling to a top of 302¢/kg
- Medium D3 yearling heifers to the trade jumped 18¢, averaging 253¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to restockers improved 7¢, averaging 224¢/kg
CTLX yarded 1,400 head, up 17% week-on-week, and quality was fair, with a good selection of prime cattle on offer but also some plainer types suitable for restockers.
- Medium C2 yearling feeder steers gained 11¢, averaging 334¢/kg
- Medium C3 yearling heifers to the trade eased 5¢, averaging 321¢ and selling to 341¢/kg
- Heavy C4 grown steers improved 13¢, averaging 341¢/kg (or 619¢g cwt)
- Heavy D4 cows improved 12¢, averaging 273¢/kg
Consignments at NVLX increased 14%, to 1,500 head, and quality was very mixed across the board, with fewer supplementary fed and crop finished yearlings suitable to the trade. The full field of buyers were present but poorer quality impacted prices in places.
- Medium C2 yearling feeder steers eased 4¢, averaging 330¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling steers to the trade lost 6¢, averaging 340¢/kg
- The same weight and condition heifers improved 5¢, averaging 323¢ and selling to 341¢/kg
- Heavy C3 grown steers gained 4¢, averaging 333¢/kg
At the close of Tuesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 576.25¢, up 4.25¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers averaged 326¢, up 4¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers averaged 317¢, up 5¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers averaged 309¢, back 12¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers averaged 324¢, up 3¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows averaged 240¢, up 2¢/kg lwt
