Tuesday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Toowoomba Elders lifted 68%, to 822 head, and the fair panel of buyers operated in a mostly dearer market, with young cattle supported by strong feeder, restocker and trade competition. Medium C2 yearling feeder steers improved 7¢, averaging 266¢, while light (200-280kg) C2 yearling feeder heifers sold from 224¢ to 249¢, to average 237¢/kg. The few grown steers and bullocks also sold to a dearer trend and heavy D4 cows to slaughter improved 6¢, averaging 225¢/kg.
Yardings at TRLX Tamworth increased 63%, to 1,595 head, and quality was mixed, with good runs of well-bred secondary cattle along with lines of finished young cattle off crop and supplementary feed. While trends varied throughout, prices were firm to dearer across most categories. Medium C2 yearling steers to feeder buyers improved 1¢, averaging 306¢ and selling to a top of 328¢, while light (280-330kg) C2 yearling heifers to restockers eased 1¢, averaging 278¢/kg. Grown steers and heifers were limited but the good supply of cows sold to a dearer trend, with heavy D4 lines gaining 10¢, to average 234¢/kg.
Consignments at Wagga lifted 25%, with 5,425 head offered. Young cattle sold to a mixed trend while grown cattle continued to sell to strong competition. On average, EYCI eligible cattle at Wagga eased 25.48¢/kg cwt but still remained historically high, at 537.85¢/kg cwt. Medium C2 yearling feeder steers improved 2¢, averaging 314¢, while the heavy lines to the same orders slipped 13¢, averaging 300¢/kg. Light (200-280kg) yearling heifers to restockers eased 12¢, averaging 264¢, while medium weight C2 lines to feeder buyers lifted 6¢, averaging 294¢/kg. Heavy C3 grown steers to slaughter eased 5¢, averaging 308¢, while heavy D3 cows jumped 10¢, averaging 241¢/kg.
At the close of Monday’s markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 533.00¢, back 1.25¢/kg cwt on where it finished last week. Trade steers improved 5¢, to 310¢, while feeder steers were steady, at 302¢/kg lwt. Medium steers slipped 5¢, to 275¢, while heavy steers eased 2¢, to close at 276¢/kg lwt. Medium cows were steady, at 211¢/kg lwt.
