Thursday daily sheep summary

CTLX lamb consignments were up 94%, to 7,000 head, week-on-week. Quality was mixed, with a larger selection of well finished new season lambs, accompanied by fewer older lambs, making up the yarding.

Sheep numbers also jumped, up 66%, to 2,825 head. Similarly, mutton quality was also mixed, with heavy first cross ewes selling to a cheaper trend.

• New season light weight 2 score lambs were up 30¢ on 522¢/kg cwt
• New season trade weight 4 score lambs eased 31¢ on 484¢/kg cwt
• New season heavy weight 4 score lambs dropped 20¢ on 472¢/kg cwt
• Old season trade weight 3 score Merino lambs averaged 433¢/kg cwt
• Medium weight 4 score first cross ewes were up 47¢, averaging 299¢/kg cwt

Throughput at Hamilton was down 21%, to 1,009 head. Quality was plain to average in older lamb offerings, and mixed in sheep yardings, for the small number of buyers that attended. Restocker activity also remained subdued as smaller numbers were penned week-on-week.

Sheep numbers were up slightly to 1,413 head. Light weight sheep held firm, as the better conditioned medium and heavy lines trended cheaper on week-ago prices.

• Old season trade weight 3 score lambs dropped 45¢ on 474¢/kg cwt
• Old season heavy weight 4 score lambs averaged 483¢/kg cwt
• Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes slipped 17¢ on 332¢/kg cwt
• Light weight 2 score Merino wethers averaged 337¢/kg cwt

At the close of Wednesday’s markets:

• The eastern states restocker lamb indicator declined 7¢ on 566¢/kg cwt
• Merino lambs eased 1¢ on 469¢/kg cwt
• Light lambs were back 2¢ on 508¢/kg cwt
• Trade lambs were down 1¢ on 536¢/kg cwt
• Heavy lambs decreased 2¢ on 522¢/kg cwt
• The mutton indicator was 2¢ lower and finished on 344¢/kg cwt
