Thursday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Dalby increased 6%, to 5,267 head, with all categories but bullocks well represented. Restockers were active on light young steers while feeder buyers dominated the medium weights and female portion. Grown cattle sold to a dearer trend, with cows supported by additional restocker interest. Light (200-280kg) C3 yearling steers to restockers and medium weights to feeder buyers both eased 4¢, averaging 268¢ and 263¢, respectively, while medium C2 yearling heifers to feed on improved 1¢, averaging 252¢/kg. Medium C3 grown feeder steers improved 12¢, averaging 247¢, while heavy D4 cows gained 1¢, averaging 216¢/kg.
Consignments to Casino lifted 18%, to 1,688 head, and quality continued to be mixed, with a fair number of plain cattle continuing to come through. Increasing 11.76¢/kg cwt week-on-week, to 464.81¢/kg cwt, EYCI eligible cattle at Casino continue to sell at a discount to other NSW markets however this is primarily driven by the large vealer, and in particular vealer heifer, weighting on the market. Light (0-200kg) D2 vealer steers to restockers eased 11¢, averaging 259¢, while the slightly heavier (200-280kg) C2 portion to the same orders gained 18¢, averaging 277¢/kg. Light (200-280kg) C2 vealer heifers to the trade eased 1¢, averaging 231¢ and selling to a top of 245¢/kg. Medium D2 cows to slaughter improved 8¢, averaging 174¢ and selling to 187¢/kg.
Warrnambool yarded 606 head, back 25% week-on-week. Most cattle were in lean condition and price trends varied throughout. Heavy C3 yearling heifers to the trade eased 6¢, averaging 268¢ and making a top of 276¢/kg. Medium C2 grown steers to slaughter eased 12¢, averaging 256¢, while heavy D1 dairy cows jumped 18¢, averaging 178¢/kg.
At the close of Wednesday’s markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 509.00¢, up 1.50¢/kg cwt on the previous day and the highest value on record. Trade steers improved 3¢, hitting 300¢ for the first time, while feeder steers eased 3¢, to 284¢/kg lwt. Medium steers jumped 28¢, to 265¢, while heavy steers eased 3¢, to close at 281¢/kg lwt. Medium cows averaged 196¢, up 2¢/kg lwt.
