Thursday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Dalby increased 28%, to 6,844 head. Most young cattle went to feeder and restocker buyers and prices mostly improved, particularly amongst the heifer portion. All the regular export buyers were active and competing in a dearer market.
- Medium C3 yearling feeder steers eased 7¢, to average 283¢ and sell to a top of 299¢/kg
- The same condition heifer portion improved 13¢, averaging 268¢/kg
- C4 bullocks gained 11¢, averaging 277¢ and selling to a top of 283¢/kg
- Medium D4 cows to slaughter increased 9¢, to average 243¢/kg
- Heavy C3 bulls averaged 240¢, up 8¢/kg week-on-week
Consignments at Casino doubled, to 2,423 head, and young cattle made up the majority. Quality varied throughout, with several runs of milk vealers offered and a large percentage of the yarding coming forward in plain condition.
- Light (200-280kg) C2 vealer steers to restockers jumped 27¢, to average 294¢/kg
- The same weight D2 lines, however, slipped 15¢, averaging 273¢/kg
- Light (0-200kg) D2 vealer heifers to restockers eased 2¢, averaging 226¢/kg
- The slightly heavier (200-280kg) C2 portion to the trade gained 12¢, to average 250¢/kg
- Medium D2 cows to slaughter averaged 210¢, back 7¢/kg week-on-week
Warrnambool yarded 800 head, up 20% week-on-week. All the regular buyers were active and prices remained strong, with primarily quality related price variations. Young cattle were limited and most were in secondary condition.
- Heavy C3 grown steers were steady, averaging 279¢/kg
- Medium D1 dairy cows averaged 169¢ and sold to a top of 177¢/kg
- Heavy D2 dairy lines eased 5¢, to average 202¢/kg
At the close of Wednesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 538.50¢, up 1.00¢/kg cwt on the previous day
- Trade steers averaged 311¢, up 7¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers made 298¢, back 4¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers jumped 11¢, to 286¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers averaged 298¢, back 5¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows made 219¢, up 2¢/kg lwt
