Thursday daily cattle summary

Dalby numbers increased 29%, to 5,863. Quality overall was strong, aside from a few lines showing some effects of drought. All the usual buyers operated and there was quite a competitive market for young light weight cattle returning to the paddock.
- Light C2 vealer heifers held steady, averaging 292¢/kg
- Medium C2 yearling feeder steers were up 21¢, averaging 322¢/kg
- Medium C3 yearling feeder heifers jumped 19¢, averaging 306¢/kg
- Heavy C4 grown steers to slaughter improved 12¢, averaging 304¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows to slaughter increased 8¢, averaging 268¢/kg
Throughput at Casino increased 11% week-on-week, to 1,370. There was a strong offering of young cattle penned and, with only a small amount of light yearlings, quality was mixed across the board. Several pens of supplementary fed and crop finished cattle made up the remainder of the yarding, with export orders mainly consisting of medium weight cows.
- Medium C2 vealer restocker steers were up 20¢, averaging 322¢/kg
- Medium C2 vealer heifers to slaughter eased 3¢, averaging 294¢/kg
- Medium D2 cows to slaughter jumped 5¢, averaging 222¢/kg
Leongatha consigned 1,149 head, down 18% week-on-week. The majority of the usual buying group were present, although not all were operating in what were mixed market conditions. Cows sold to the cheaper trend, however a better selection of young cattle and yearling heifers ensured demand remained strong.
- Heavy D3 yearling heifers to slaughter were up 1¢, averaging 312¢/kg
- Heavy D3 grown steers to slaughter increased 2¢, averaging 325¢/kg
- Medium E1 cows dropped 5¢, averaging 193¢/kg
At the close of Wednesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 582.50¢, up 3.50¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers averaged 321¢, up 1¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers averaged 318¢, up 3¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers averaged 304¢, up 4¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers averaged 312¢/kg lwt, steady
- Medium cows averaged 240¢/kg lwt, steady
