Thursday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Dalby increased 7%, to 5,631 head, and only bullocks were in limited supply. A good line-up of restockers, active on young light weight cattle from drought affected regions, joined the usual panel of export processor and feeder buyers. Butchers and supermarkets were active on slaughter yearling heifers, while export cattle mostly trended firm to a little dearer.
- Light (200-280kg) C2 yearling steers to restockers eased 14¢, averaging 295¢ and selling to a top of 333¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling feeder steers improved 11¢, to average 310¢/kg
- Light (200-280kg) C2 yearling restocker heifers improved 5¢, averaging 260¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling slaughter heifers were firm, at 290¢/kg
- Heavy C4 grown steers improved 3¢, averaging 285¢/kg
- Heavy D4 cows were steady, at 249¢/kg
Consignments at Casino increased 7%, to 1,818 head of mostly young cattle. Quality was mixed, with several pens of supplementary fed and crop finished lines but also increased numbers of light plain calves. Young cattle prices mostly eased but the medium and heavy cows were firm to dearer.
- Light (0-200kg) D2 vealer restocker steers eased 7¢, averaging 277¢/kg
- The same weight and condition female lines eased 5¢, averaging 249¢/kg
- Medium (200-280kg) C2 vealer steers to the trade also slipped 5¢, averaging 272¢/kg
- Medium D3 cows to slaughter averaged 234¢, up 3¢/kg on last week
Warrnambool yarded 743 head, back 40% week-on-week. Quality was mainly plain to average, with limited numbers in good condition. Two additional buyers joined the usual panel and trends varied throughout.
- Medium C2 yearling steers to restockers eased 13¢, averaging 294¢/kg
- Heavy C3 yearling heifers to slaughter jumped 30¢, averaging 314¢/kg
- Heavy C3 grown steers improved 7¢, averaging 300¢/kg
- Heavy D1 dairy cows gained 12¢, averaging 220¢/kg
At the close of Wednesday’s markets:
- The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 564.50¢, back 2.00¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
- Trade steers averaged 320¢, up 1¢/kg lwt
- Feeder steers averaged 313¢, up 2¢/kg lwt
- Medium steers averaged 301¢, up 7¢/kg lwt
- Heavy steers averaged 317¢, up 4¢/kg lwt
- Medium cows averaged 235¢, up 1¢/kg lwt
