Cattle

There was a smaller yarding of trade and export cattle at Powranna and Killafaddy on Tuesday with smaller numbers in most categories, but cow numbers were significantly less.

Prices for all cattle were higher and at all-time record levels across all grades.

• Trade yearlings averaged 15¢ to 30¢ higher with steers making 278¢ to 322¢ and heifers returning 284¢ to 326¢/kg
• There were few grown steers and bullocks and these sold from 302¢ to 328¢/kg
• The good line-up of heavy export heifers sold from 308¢ to 330¢/kg

There were 115 cows yarded and all met strong competition.

• Very poor quality cows sold to restockers for 122¢ to 212¢/kg
• Exporters bought very lean D1 cows for 190¢ to 234¢ and medium weight beef cows for 256¢ to 294¢/kg
• Heavy beef cows sold from 271¢ to 318¢, to average 304¢, up 37¢/kg higher than last week

Sheep 

There were smaller numbers of both sheep and lambs at Powranna and Killafaddy on Tuesday with the smallest mutton numbers for the year. There was a smaller yarding of lambs and quality is showing the effects of a very cold winter. With one regular buyer very quiet most prices were $4 to $6/head cheaper.

• Light export lambs made $65 to $84/head
• Light trade weights sold from $87 to $96 and trade weights made from $119 to $129/head
• Heavy weights sold from $141 to $143 and extra heavy weights made from $145 to $153/head.

There was a very small yarding of mutton of mainly light ewes and very limited good quality medium weights. Prices were generally $3/head cheaper.

• Light ewes made $40 to $68 and a few heavy ewes sold from $85 to $95/head.
