SA weekly sheep summary

Lambs

SA lamb supply eased 28% week-on-week in MLA reported saleyards, with 11,395 head penned.

  • The SA Livestock Exchange consigned 8,998 head, representing a 36% decrease
  • Numbers at Naracoorte increased 38%, to 2,397 head

Light weight Merino three score new season lambs eased 48¢, to average 476¢, while cross bred lambs reached 628¢ and averaged 529¢, back 31¢/kg cwt. Heavier four score trade weights to processors sold between 467¢ and 559¢ and averaged 508¢/kg cwt. Heavy new season lambs to processors reached 570¢ and returned an average of 529¢/kg cwt.

Heavy weight 3 score old lambs to slaughter were 57¢ dearer for cross breeds, averaging 458¢, and 23¢ easier for Merinos, returning 458¢/kg cwt.

Mutton

Total mutton throughput decreased 3% from last week, totalling 3,630 head.

  • Consignments at SA Livestock Exchange eased by 27%, to 2,205 head
  • Naracoorte’s sheep supply nearly doubled, to 1,425 head

Merino medium weight two score ewes averaged 299¢, back 14¢, while heavy weight three score Merinos reached 385¢ and averaged 324¢, to be 6¢/kg cwt dearer.

Three score heavy weight Merino wethers remained firm, at 358¢/kg cwt.
