SA weekly sheep summary

Lamb

Lamb supply increased by 45% week-on-week, to 14,636 head. Naracoorte recorded an increase in numbers of 38%, penning 2,117 head. Throughput at the SA Livestock Exchange reached 12,519 head, representing an increase of 46%.

Light weight 2 score Merino lambs increased 4¢, to 486¢, while heavier light weight Merino lambs slipped 32¢, to 465¢/kg cwt. Merino trade weight 3 score lambs slipped 39¢, to average 485¢, while those to slaughter returned 543¢, up 9¢/kg cwt. Heavy weight 3 scores to processors slipped 1¢, selling at an average of 526¢, while similar Merino lambs eased 19¢, to 483¢/kg cwt.

Mutton

Mutton consignments lifted 9% week-on-week, to 2,592 head. Numbers at SA Livestock Exchange eased 9%, to 1,354 head, while supply at Naracoorte reached 1,238 head, up 39%.

The 2 score medium weight Merino ewes were back 14¢, to average 320¢, while heavy weight 3 score Merinos averaged 386¢, to be 36¢/kg cwt dearer. Merino wethers sold for an average of 385¢, up 16¢/kg cwt.
