SA weekly cattle summary

Numbers increase

Cattle supply across the state totalled 2,527 head, representing an increase of 9% week-on-week.

  • Throughput at Mount Gambier lifted 7%, to 863 head
  • Numbers at Mount Compass were reduced by 17%, to 750 head
  • The SA Livestock Exchange yarded 914 head, up 52%

Vealer and yearling steer prices ease

Medium weight C2 vealer steers to feed reached 314¢ and averaged 286.6¢, back 21¢, while heavier descriptions remained firm and returned an average of 314.2¢/kg. The C3 medium weight vealer heifers to processors were 7¢ cheaper, on 323.2¢/kg.

Heavy weight C3 yearling steers to slaughter sold between 270¢ and 346¢, averaging 316.1¢, back 2¢/kg. Their heifer counterparts were 14¢ dearer, reaching 340¢ and averaging 304.7¢, up 14¢/kg.

Medium weight grown steers to processors were 18¢ dearer on 319.3¢ while D3 light weight grown heifers returned 251.5¢, up 1¢/kg. Light D3 manufacturing steers eased 5¢, to 252.3¢/kg.

Heavy weight C4 cows to slaughter were 20¢ dearer, returning an average of 261.8¢, while D4 descriptions were 3¢ cheaper on 221.6¢/kg.
