Larger numbers penned across the state

The supply of cattle at NLRS reported saleyards in Queensland lifted by close to 10% week-on-week, with numbers dominated by young light weight cattle.

• Most centres reported relatively large numbers, with offerings at Roma Store increasing by 25%
• Restocker and feeder buyer attendance and activity was good across all markets
• Buyers were able to absorb the increased numbers, plus lift prices to higher levels, especially for the steer portion.
• The supply of bullocks continues to remain relatively small, however large numbers of cows continued to dominate the selling pens in the grown cattle sections.

Light weights in demand

Light steers weighing less than 200kg received stronger support from restockers at all markets, with some at Roma Store making to a high of 348.2¢, although most averaged in the mid-260¢/kg range.

• A large number of 200-280kg store condition yearling steers returned to the paddock at a top of 329.2¢, averaging 290¢/kg
• The largest numbers of medium weight yearling steers to feed sold to firm demand and averaged 283¢, although some well-bred lines did reach 320.2¢/kg
• Heavy weights to feed averaged up to 2¢ better, with most in the mid-280¢ range and a few pens selling to 308.2¢/kg

Light yearling heifers experienced strong support at markets early in the week, however in the latter half prices tended to ease, especially for the poor quality categories

• The best of the light yearling heifers returning to the paddock made to 290¢, while the largest numbers sold in the 240¢/kg range
• Medium weights to feed averaged 263¢, while some well-bred lines made to 297.2¢/kg

Bullocks across all markets averaged 4¢ dearer at 276¢ and some young supplementary fed classes at Warwick made to 300.2¢/kg. All classes of cows were in demand early in the week, nevertheless by mid-week prices tended to vary, with plain condition lines continuing to receive strong competition, while good heavy cows eased in price. Medium weight 2 scores averaged 202¢ and 3 scores averaged 217¢/kg. Good heavy cows made to 262.2¢, with a fair sample averaging 245¢/kg.
