Hong Kong - an important market for Australia’s red meat

01 October 2015

Hong Kong is a significant market for Australia's beef, sheepmeat, goat and offal exports.

  • For the 2014-15 fiscal year, Australia exported 17,074 tonnes swt of beef and veal to Hong Kong (82% was frozen product), worth A$125 million, making it our tenth largest export market (by value and volume). Through 2015, while the volume of frozen beef has fallen, volumes of our chilled beef have held steady.
  • Hong Kong is Australia’s biggest export market for red meat offal in terms of volume, with Australia exporting 23,952 tonnes swt for the fiscal year 2014-15 (the bulk of it frozen beef offal). It was our third largest offal market in terms of value, worth A$105.7 million over this time.
  • Hong Kong is our 15th largest market for sheepmeat, with 8,804 tonnes swt exported for the last fiscal year, predominantly lamb.  For Australian sheepmeat to Hong Kong, the average unit prices over the 2014-15 fiscal year were A$4.83/kg for lamb and A$3.73/kg for mutton.
  • Hong Kong is Australia’s seventh largest market for goat meat, exporting 1,126 tonnes for the 2014-15 fiscal year, worth A$7.3 million. However, for the year-to-date 2015, Australia only exported 60 tonnes in January and 21 tonnes in March.
