Goat indicator reaches new highs in 2014-15

The 2014-15 fiscal year saw export over-the-hook goat rates lift to unprecedented levels. Export over-the-hook goat rates (12-16kg cwt) averaged 373¢ in 2014-15, 133¢ higher than 2013-14, with the indicator continuing to reach new highs during May and June – the highest levels seen since the NLRS began reporting in 2003.
Average weekly NLRS eastern states goat slaughter during 2014-15 was 7% lower than 2013-14, at 34,667 head. Processing in Victoria and Queensland was 14% and 2% lower, averaging 11,544 head and 14,942 head per week, respectively, while SA slaughter eased 8%, to average 6,337 head. NSW was the only state to record a lift in average weekly slaughter in 2014-15, up 2% year-on-year, to 2,126 head.
Australian goatmeat exports in 2014-15 were firm year-on-year, at 34,354 tonnes swt. The US continued to drive exports, with shipments up 21% on the previous year, to 19,262 tonnes swt, while volumes to Canada increased 13%, to 2,200 tonnes swt. Stronger demand from Korea saw exports lift 38%, to 1,781 tonnes swt, while shipments to Trinidad and Tobago increased 11%, to 2,182 tonnes swt. Volumes to China and Taiwan eased in 2014-15, to 772 tonnes swt and 3,885 tonnes swt, respectively.
