Friday daily cattle summary

Quality was plainer at Dubbo this week, for a similar sized yarding of 3,650 head, with most presenting in store condition. The regular buyers were all in attendance, with an additional major supermarket operator also present. Young steers were generally 4¢ dearer, with the vealers selling to 313¢, while the prime yearling steers sold from 293¢ to 325¢/kg lwt. Young heifers sold to mostly cheaper trends, with the majority of yearlings averaging in the 280¢/kg lwt range. Grown steers were cheaper for the plainer lines and 6¢ dearer for the better quality lots. Prime condition medium and heavy weights sold from 278¢ to 329¢ to slaughter and 320¢/kg lwt to feed. The better 3 and 4 score cows made from 190¢ to 248¢/kg lwt.  

Numbers lifted by 40% at Roma Prime this week, with large numbers of 3 and 4 score cows penned. Quality was fair to good, with only a limited selection of bullocks penned. Solid competition between major Queeensland export processors boosted cow prices by 4¢ to 7¢/kg lwt, with demand was limited for heavy bulls. Bullocks sold to 270¢ and averaged 262¢, up 5¢, while heavy grown heifers averaged 240¢/kg lwt and were relatively firm on the previous sale. The 2 score cows reached 187¢ and averged 169¢, back 12¢ , while medium and heavy weight 3 scores trended dearer, averaging 224¢ and 215¢/kg lwt, respectively. Heavy 4 score cows sold to a top of 243¢/kg lwt.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 0.25¢ lower than the previous day, on 535¢/kg cwt. Trade and medium steers were firm, at 307¢ and 279¢/kg lwt, respectively. Heavy steers jumped 12¢, to 289¢, while medium cows lifted by 2¢, to 215¢/kg lwt. The feeder steer indicator was unchanged on 302¢/kg lwt.
