Friday daily cattle summary

Throughput at Roma Prime declined 23%, to just 320 head, and solid processor demand saw prices lift 9-34¢/kg.

  • C4 bullocks improved 9¢, averaging 286¢ and selling to 290¢/kg
  • Medium D3 cows jumped 18¢, averaging 232¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows lifted 29¢, averaging 266¢/kg

Dubbo yarded 3,660 head, back 4% week-on-week, with some good runs of yearlings, bullocks and cows but also a reasonable portion of western cattle lacking finish. Additional northern feeder demand joined the usual panel of buyers in what was a dearer market.

  • Heavy C3 yearling feeder steers jumped 17¢, averaging 314¢ and selling to a top of 332¢/kg
  • Medium C3 yearling heifers to feeder buyers improved16¢, averaging 298¢/kg
  • Heavy C4 grown steers gained 8¢, averaging 296¢/kg
  • Heavy D4 cows improved 9¢, averaging 242¢/kg

Consignments at Leongatha lifted 48%, to 2,332 head, and price trends were mixed but generally firm. Quality was good with a larger proportion of the yarding showing good finish.

  • Medium C3 yearling steers to the trade eased 7¢, averaging 296¢/kg
  • Medium D3 yearling heifers to the same orders also eased 7¢, averaging 265¢/kg
  • D3 bullocks were firm, averaging 286¢ and selling to 292¢/kg
  • Heavy D2 cows improved 8¢, averaging 218¢/kg

At the close of Thursday’s markets:

  • The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) settled at 546.50¢, up 3.75¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day
  • Trade steers averaged 295¢, up 1¢/kg lwt
  • Medium steers averaged 280¢, back 3¢/kg lwt
  • Heavy steers averaged 293¢, up 3¢/kg lwt
  • Medium cows averaged 229¢, up 4¢/kg lwt
  • Feeder steers averaged 300¢/kg lwt, steady
