Consignments at Roma Prime lifted 24%, to 1,056 head, and all the regular export processors competed in a dearer market. Heavy C4 grown steers improved 3¢, averaging 243¢, while light D4 grown heifers gained 10¢, averaging 231¢/kg. Cow prices also recorded strong growth, with most medium and heavy weights returning above 200¢/kg. Medium D3 cows increased 9¢, averaging 206¢, and the heavy D4 lines improved 10¢, averaging 228¢/kg.
Throughput at Dubbo increased 29%, to 3,550 head, and quality was fair to good. Young cattle, suitable to feeder buyers and processors, were well supplied and there was a good selection of prime bullocks and cows. All the regular buyers were operating and, while grown cattle sold to dearer trend, young steers sold close to firm while heavy yearling heifers eased on last week’s prices. Heavy C3 yearling steers to feed on improved 1¢, averaging 312¢ and selling to a top of 323¢/kg. Heavy C3 yearling heifers to slaughter eased 7¢, averaging 292¢, while the portion to feeder buyers lost 8¢, making 283¢/kg. Heavy C4 grown steers to processors jumped 10¢, averaging 283¢, while heavy D4 cows gained 15¢, averaging 238¢/kg lwt or 470¢/kg cwt.
Bairnsdale yarded 875 head, back 11% week-on-week, and prices for the mixed quality yarding mostly declined from last week’s elevated levels. Vealers made up the majority of young cattle, and the heavy B3 steers and heifers peaked at 336¢ and 310¢/kg, respectively. The majority of grown steers lacked finish and heavy D3 lines eased 3¢, averaging 304¢/kg. Heavy cows sold to a mixed trend but D3 beef cows were firm, averaging 243¢/kg.
At the close of Thursday’s markets, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished at 534.25¢, up 0.75¢/kg cwt on where it finished the previous day and the highest value on record. Trade steers eased 1¢, to 304¢, while feeder steers were steady, at 302¢/kg lwt. Medium steers eased 3¢, to 280¢, while heavy steers slipped 10¢, to close at 278¢/kg lwt. Medium cows averaged 211¢, up 1¢/kg lwt.
